Joel Smith, Student Ministries Director candidate, will lead in worship. Grace Hecker, soloist. Nursery provided. 11:15 A.M. JUNIOR CHURCH ages 4-grade 4, dismissed for classes. 7:00 P.M. Tracy Dunn will present an ISLAMIC AWARENESS CONFERENCE at the Community Center (7 P.M. to 10 P.M.). CHURCH CALENDAR: Tuesday: Trustee Meeting, 7 P.M. Wednesday: Bible Study and Prayer, 7 P.M. Wednesday: Choir Practice, 8 P.M. COMING EVENTS: JULY 30: Semi-Annual Congregational Meeting, 7 P.M. AUGUST 4-8: KIDS ISLAND ADVENTURE DAY-CAMP: Held at Island Camping and Retreat, this event is for all kids, grades 1-6, and includes 5 fun days of skits, songs, bible stories and games. Kids, grades 1-4, will have a half day, 9 a.m. to noon, and kids, grades 5-6, will have a full day, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Contact Sharon Stults 847-2190 or Pastor Phil 847-2116 or 2155 to register or for more information. We have had to cut the younger ages already because of lack of staff, but help is still needed to proceed with this important ministry. Please call Sharon or Pastor if you can assist in any way. AUGUST 10: Baptism service at Schoolhouse Beach following a potluck dinner at noon. All those interested in following the Lord in baptism, please contact Pastor Phil at 847-2116 or 847-2155. AUGUST 17: Men of Harmony, in concert, 10:45 a.m. at Bethel. This is a worship service you don’t want to miss with 17 men singing the old hymns and some new songs in the great Southern gospel style. AUGUST 24: Ray Olson, Church Multiplication Specialist with Forest Lakes District EFCA will be our special speaker during Sunday School and the Morning Worship. AUGUST 31: Delmar Dahl will be speaker for Sunday School and Morning Worship. Pastor Phil and Sandy will be taking their son Tim to college in Kansas. CHURCH NEWS: Thanks to Dolores Wenzler for filling the piano position July 13 and to Betty Musker and Daniel Swan for their special solos. * A lovely party followed the evening service for the Muskers Golden Wedding Celebration. Here for the occasion were their children, Jennifer and Joel and daughter Joelyn, Clear Lake, Iowa; son Jeff, Houston, TX; and cousins from Iowa. Thanks to Bethel Builders for assisting with food. * Gifts received from Genevieve Wickman in memory of Jack Hagen; from Mae Kleinhans in memory of Gurdrun Jepsen. “Enclosed is a gift for Bethel. We appreciated the wonderful service with Pastor Phil and the beautiful white church on the hill.” The Jorgenson Family. FROM THE MAIL BAG: “I have just returned from my fifth trip to Africa, where I held my fourth Early Childhood Education training for 170 orphan caregivers in Malawi. Through the Lusubilo Orphan Care Program that serves 3000 total orphans who have lost both parents to malaria or HIV. This has been a great blessing in my life.” Carol Eglsaer. (She and her husband are summer visitors at their home on Main Road. Former home of the late Lizzie Hanson. * Thanks to Keith Mann and Mann’s Mercantile for the lovely 8 foot maple tree given to Bethel Church. It replaces the 200 year old one which was dying and had to be removed. COMMUNITY NEWS: Word was received that Harriett Cornell will be transferred from Door County Memorial Hospital to Scand in Sister Bay where she will have therapy. She had been taken away after suffering a cracked pelvis. * A Memorial Service for Ginny Ellefson will be held July 26 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1 P.M. Lunch will follow in the Fellowship Hall. * This weekend is the Annual Fly In Fish Boil at the airport sponsored by the W.I. Lion’s Club. * U.S. Senator Feingold, held a listening session in the Community Center July 12. Over 200 people attended and presented many items of concern. He was well received and stayed overnight at the Washington Hotel. * A special memorial service was presented by the Hagen, Swan, and Nehlsen families July 14 at the Performing Arts Center. The TPAC was filled to capacity with friends to show appreciation for his life. Children, Julian Hagen, Leila Nehlsen, Linda Swan and Linda’s husband, Mike, headed the musical concert. Also singing special numbers were Sally Swan, Rachelle O’Brien, Jennelle Swan, Daniel Swan and his wife, Lauren, and Marisa Nehlsen. A brief history of Jack’s life was read by Jonathon O’Brien, with Jack’s 2 year old great grandson, Jameson, standing in the wings. It was truly a special tribute to the memory of Jack Hagen. Lunch was served on the porch following the program. * 32 members of the Everall and Chuck Jorgenson family were together last weekend for a belated celebration of Chuck’s 80th birthday as Chuck had been in the hospital at the time. They also took the opportunity to celebrate Everall’s birthday coming up July 22. * Mrs. Kirby (Jeannie) Gunnlaugsson is recuperating at home following gall bladder surgery. * Lloyd and Venita Fons celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with a dinner July 11 at Bread and Water, which is owned by their daughter, Valerie. * Seven homes will be featured on the House Walk July 26 sponsored by the W.I. Farm Museum. * About 300 attended the great fish boil July 4th weekend and sponsored by the American Legion. * Karen Gordon had gall bladder surgery July 15th at Door County Memorial Hospital. She was expected to be released Wednesday. * The 60th annual Scandinavian Fest will be held August 2 at the Jacqueline Foss Memorial outdoor stage. There will be new surprise presentations for this event. * You are invited to the 80th Birthday Celebration of Lee McDonald, Sunday, July 27 from 2-4 P.M. at Trinity Fellowship Hall. * Washington Island Music Festival Music Camp is August 11-15 at Bethel Church, Kari Gordon, director. * For the June 26th meeting, the Door County Board of Supervisors met on Washington Island. The Island has hosted the board four or five times in the 150 years of history of Door County. About 12 Island residents attended. * A Memorial Service for Charles Stainbrook, 87, who died July 8 in Milwaukee, WI, will be held 10 A.M. at Bethel Church. Graveside service to follow. Lunch in Memorial Hall.* The annual International Food Fest, sponsored by W.I. Women’s Club will be held July 25th at the Community Center, 11 A.M. to 2 P.M. * The 26th Annual Kewaunee-Door County Salmon Tournament will be held July 26-August 3. The grand prize is $10,000 cash (doubled from last year). Many more prizes including daily port prizes. Kap’s Marina is the Washington Island weigh-in center for the Tournament. |
